<intro>
After losing to the Wizards, by six, the Bulls bounced back with a win against the Indiana Pacers. However, the game the Trailblazers would be a better measuring stick of how good they are being that Portland is one of the better teams in the Western Conference.

The Bulls would jump out to a 31-22 lead after the first quarter and would lead by as many as 13 points in the second quarter. However, Chicago would allow the Trailblazers to close within 52-51 going into halftime despite shooting 55% from the field. The Blazers were 13 of 15 from the free-throw line and enjoyed a 24-14 advantage with points in the paint. Portland’s momentum would carry over into the second half and they would stake out to a nine point lead but despite Chicago’s somewhat erratic play, the Bulls would manage to cling to an 80-79 lead heading into the final period.

Being that the teams pretty much battled back and forth much of the second half, it would only be fitting that the game would be tied with seconds remaining. Derrick Rose, who led the Bulls with 33 points, had a chance to win the game in regulation as he drove the lane and put up a finger roll that hung on the rim but would eventually spin out, and sending the teams into overtime tied at 103. With the Bulls up by three points, Blazer forward, Lamarcus Aldridge would maneuver around Joakim Noah to tip in a missed free throw to bring Portland within a point (112-111). The Bulls would split a pair of free throws to go up 113-111. On the Blazers’ next possession, Brandon Roy would attempt to go for the win instead of tying the game and his miss would lead to a fast break bucket for Bulls, thus dashing any hopes the Blazers had of winning the game. The 115-111 victory over the Blazers improves the Bulls’ record to 31-27 and most importantly, moves them within a half game of the Toronto Raptors for the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference.
</intro>

    <intro>
The Chicago Bulls have traded John Salmons to the Bucks for F Kurt Thomas and C Francisco Elson. The move looks to be a salary dump for the Bulls whp were looking to free up money for this upcoming big off season.

Salmons who was averaging 12.7ppg this year had a rocky start to the season. He has appeared in 51 games this year starting in 28. Salmons was a key pick up for the Bulls last season who made a late run to make the playoffs. Salmons has a player option in his contract next year that Bulls did not want to worry about being picked up. Thomas and Elson become free agents at the end of the year.
</intro>

    <intro>
The Bulls went into the All-Star break 25-26, following a 107-87 beat down at the hands of the Orlando Magic. Not only did they lose the game by a large margin, Derrick Rose had to leave the game early after suffering a bruised hip. Things don’t get any easier for Chicago with a string of four games in five nights ahead and lingering injuries to Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah and Brad Miller.

Despite all of the negatives heading into the game against the Knicks, the Bulls managed one of their most impressive performances of the season toppling New York 118-85. You couldn’t tell that Rose was suffering from a serious injury with his play as he led all scorers with 29 points connecting on 14 of 18 shots from the field. In fact the Bulls had seven players who scored in double figures as they matched their largest victory total of the season. The Bulls also defeated the Pistons by 33 points earlier this season. While the Bulls held a sizable 64-50 lead at the half, one could not be sure if they would allow the Knicks to get back into the game. After all, this is the team that lost to the Sacramento Kings after blowing a 35 point lead.

However, the Bulls would not let up off the accelerator this time as would outscore the Knicks 31-18 in the third quarter and would enjoy at 95-68 lead heading into the final period. The starters were able to rest their starters for the entire final period which is a good thing because they play against this same New York team tonight in Madison Square Garden. While a home and home series is always tough, if Chicago can play with the same intensity and focus as they did last night, they should be able to pull out another win against the New Yorkers.
</intro>

    <intro>

Derrick Rose, the winner of last years NBA All-Star Skills Challenge will not defend his title at this years competition due to a bruised hip.

Rose said Saturday morning that he and agent, former Bulls player, B.J. Armstrong would make the decision following Bulls physician Brian Cole's examination.

"I probably won't do it," Rose said then.

Cole re-examined Rose's bruised right hip and back Saturday morning following the Eastern Conference All-Star practice, and it was decided that Rose would drop out of the competition to be held Saturday afternoon.

The NBA announced that Oklahoma City guard Russell Westbrook would replace Rose, his close friend and summer workout partner, in the competition. Bucks guard Brandon Jennings, Suns guard Steve Nash and Jazz guard Deron Williams also will compete in the Skills Challenge.

Rose is still optimistic he will be able to at least play nine-minute segments in each half of Sunday's NBA All-Star game. In addition, he is confident that he will be at full strength when the Bulls return to regular-season play on Tuesday against the New York Knicks.

"We've got four games in five nights, so this is an important week," Rose said. "I am getting better every day and will be fine."

Some say it began on a Saturday night in Phoenix. It was like Rose needed a reason to become selfish and he got one that night. Rose and his management group decided to donate $1,000 for every point he scored. That night he went for 32 points capped off by a thunderous dunk on Goran Dragic. Derrick, it seemed wanted to put a stamp on his arrival.

On the season, the 21-year-old Rose is averaging 19.8 points and 5.8 assist. However, over the last month, he is averaging 23 ppg and 6.4 assist. Over that stretch the Bulls have went 10-5. With six over the victories coming on the road five of which were in a row. In those victories and the loses Rose has demanded the ball down the stretch and has made key plays.

Rose began his path to stardom winning the Rookie of the Year last season. The Bulls and Rose held the basketball world captive with their thrilling playoff series against the Boston Celtics. On February 14, Rose will make his All Star Game debut. Last season during All-star Weekend, he created a buzz by winning the Skills challenge in impressive fashion finishing with a monstrous dunk. What the future holds for Rose is unclear but if he continues on this path, he is on his way to being a true NBA star.
</intro>

    <intro>
The Chicago Bulls have announced that All-Star point guard Derrick Rose and that he hopes to defend his Skills Challenge title and participate in his first All-Star game on Sunday as he suffered "no significant injury" to his hip or lower back after a hard foul by Orlando's Dwight Howard in Wednesday night’s game against the Magic.

Dwight Howard fouled Rose on a driving lay-up just 2 minutes, 24 seconds after the start of the game. Rose made the acrobatic shot, then landed hard on his backside and hip after Howard's contact knocked him off-balance.

Rose lay face down on the court while clutching his lower back and was slow to get back up for close to two minutes before gingerly rising and sinking the free throw to complete the three-point play. The Bulls then had Devin Brown intentionally foul on the ensuing inbounds, allowing John Salmons to replace Rose, who did not return to the game.

The Bulls stated on Thursday that both an MRI and X-rays revealed no major damage to Rose’s bruised right hip one day after Rose left the game with a bruised right hip.

Rose will be re-examined on Saturday by team physician Dr. Brian Cole in Dallas.
<intro>
Just recently ESPN reported that Chicago Bull's coach, Vinny Del Negro, was going to be fired soon, and that the only reason he hasn't is because the mangement hasn't been able to find his replacement.

Del Negro spoke today about the decison to fire him was already made, saying it was "totally inaccurate."

"It's just funny to me," Del Negro said. "There's really nothing to say. You have all these people that have rumors, and everyone has their sources. It's just not accurate.

"I don't have time to deal with rumors. I talk to Gar and Pax every day. They're at practice every day. It's just that you got to deal with those things. It's unfortunate. Everyone has their source. No one's sources so far have been very accurate. My focus is getting the team ready for [Tuesday's game] against Indiana."

Del Negro went on to say that he knows that people are upset with the Bull's 11-17 record, and that coaches are supposed to meet certain expectations, but him and Paxson and the rest of the staff are on the same page.

"We have to go with the guys that are ready to go, and we need to play a little bit better. And do it more consistently. I can take that. But, all these sources, and all these people that come out just trying to fill space, that's going to happen. It's just part of the way people are ... I don't let it affect myself or the team. I focus on what I can control and that's our effort and our preparation. And our work today."

    <intro>
Goodbye Vinny Del Negro, your pink slip awaits.

In what is the biggest choke job in recent history, the Chicago Bulls let a 35 point lead go down the drain against a the third youngest team in the NBA—the Sacramento Kings—in a 102-98 back-breaker.

The Bulls led 79-44 with 8:50 left in the third quarter, and were still up 83-50 two minutes later, before the Kings went on their run. The Kings closed the third quarter on a 19-5 run and then took over in the fourth.

They outscored the Bulls 33-10 in the fourth led by the sensational rookie Tyreke Evans. He had 23 points to go along with eight rebounds. The Bulls had no answer as they could only watch in horror as the road team completely embarrassed the Bulls faithful. The Kings outscored the Bulls 58-19 to end the game. 58-19!!!

The Bulls sit at 10-16 and if Del Negro has a job this weekend I would be surprised. Duds like losing to the woeful Nets, getting blown out by the mediocre at best Raptors, and a 2-10 road record add up to a terrible start for a team that was expected to improve on last year's playoff appearance.

Instead they sit nine-and-a-half games back of the Cavs in the Central division and appear to be going no where.

Luol Deng is simply not a player to build a team around. Deng's injuries have kept him out of 72 games in the previous two seasons. He has been playing with a fractured left thumb that will take 6-8 weeks to heel, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Second year guard Derrick Rose is averaging 17 points a game and 5.6 assists but has not made the Chris Paul like jump many experts predicted he would make this year.

And when a career bench player like John Salmons is third on the team in scoring and averaging 37 minutes a night, there is going to be trouble.

So maybe Del Negro doesn't have the best weapons at his disposal. But the lack of passion and energy has clearly been established. That falls on the coach. It appears that the players have tuned him out and wouldn't mind a new guy barking at them.

His name has already been mentioned as a possible candidate to be fired, and after a game like this, he should be.
</intro>

The Chicago Bulls rose to the occasion against the San Antonio Spurs in a 92-85 victory where a balanced offense (with six players in double figures), and a balanced defense, were key in the team’s success. However, it would be interesting to see how they would fare against a Boston Celtic team that was healthy again with the addition on Rasheed Wallace.

The Celtics beat the Bulls pretty handily in two of their three regular season meetings last year and outlasted the Bulls in an epic seven games series in the first round of the playoffs. While head coach Vinny Del Negro would call this game a barometer of how far this team had come, I thought it would be the case of a relatively young team that would struggle coming off a huge victory against one of the better teams in the league but I was hoping that they would prove me wrong.

Unfortunately my hopes would be dashed early in this game as the Chicago Bulls would fall behind early in the second quarter and would never recover. The Boston Celtics would cruise to 50-35 halftime lead and things wouldn’t get any better in the second half. The Bulls cold shooting would continue and the Boston Celtics would run away in the second half and would win the game 118-90. The only positive from this game was the play of power forward Joakim Noah one of the top scorers for the Bulls’ s with 16 points connecting on seven of his ten shot attempts from the field. He was one of the few Bulls players who seemed to have anything close to an offensive rhythm for the entire game. If the Bulls are hoping to take steps toward being a better team, their road play will have to improve dramatically. While this is only one game out of 41 they will play on the road this year, it is definitely not how you want to begin the year the first game away from home. Let’s hope they can learn from the miscues of this game and prepare for DeWayne Wade and the Miami Heat tomorrow.
</intro>

    <intro>
Last we saw of this young team, they were watching the Celtics move on to the next round of the playoffs. Even without Loul Deng and an injured Salmons, if one or two things had gone differently, the Bulls could have easily been the team advancing to the second round of last year's playoffs. However, while the defeat was disappointing, the team felt that the team would take a step forward coming into this season, a sentiment that hasn't been felt in a couple of years.

However, the team had to deal with off-season distractions with the departure of Gordon to Central Division rival Pistons along with allegations of Derrick Rose not taking his SAT prior to attending the University of Memphis. Along with that, the Bulls did not make any significant moves in the off-season with the exceptions of their two draft picks while both Cleveland and Orlando made moves to improve their respective rosters. So the question is, what will the Bulls look like coming into the season and what needs to happen in order for the team to take that next step?

Rose Must Be More Assertive:

First, Derrick Rose will need to assert himself more this season than he did last year. If you look back at several games in the Celtics series, he is ready to be a star for this team. His 36 points and 11 assists were a huge reason the Bulls were able to steal the opening game from the Celtics. I admire his wanting to defer to the veterans on the team but he will have to be a bit more assertive as the ball will placed in his hands a lot. He has to be willing to take the big shot when the opportunity presents itself or find the open teammate when his driving lane has been cut off. If Rose, is more aggressive, the team will be better for this reason alone.

Frontcourt Improvement:

Tyrus Thomas is a very gifted, athletic player who doesn't always play up to his potential. This guy can get to the rim anytime he wants but often chooses to take jump shots instead. I feel that improved shot selection will have to be a factor if he's going to become the player this team had hoped to see. With regards to Noah, not too much praise was being given to him entering the playoffs last year. However, he showed that he is a capable scorer and aggressive rebounder as he averaged a double-double (10 points, 13 rebounds), against the Celtics in the post season. If he can develop a low-post game along with a jump shot from 5-10 feet away from the rim, that will definitely add a dimension to his game.

Deng Has To Regain Form:

A couple of seasons ago, Luol Deng was scoring average was a shade above 18 points per game and as he continues to progress from the injury last season, look for him to return that form. He is one of the few players on the Bulls who can create his own shot whether its from the outside or driving the ball to the rim. He says he feels great right now and if that continues to be the case when the season begins, it will be a major plus to say the least.

Backcourt Rotation:

John Salmons (who was also injured last season), filled in for Deng at the small forward position and averaged about 20 points per contest. With Deng returning, he will now move over to the two-guard spot alongside Derrick Rose. I think Rose and Salmons will make a formidable backcourt tandem and will provide better defense and more size than Gordon did a season ago. Let's not forget about Heinrich who will be coming off the bench. Heinrich is a capable scorer/shooter and a gritty defender who can spell either position when they need it.

While the Bulls are still a few pieces away from being considered a championship caliber team, they will more than likely finish the season higher than the 7th spot from a season ago. If the team makes the expected strides, it's very possible this team could steal the 4th seed and have home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs come next year. That is probably jumping the gun a little but you never know. As with the Bears, this team also comes into the season with a lot of expectations on its shoulders. Let's see if they are capable of living up to them.
</intro>

    <intro>
        In the 2008 NBA draft the Chicago Bulls selected Memphis star guard Derrick Rose with the #1 overall pick in the draft, a season later the franchise hopes he can develop all-star consistency.

Rose won rookie of the year honers last season averaging 16.8 ppg and 6.3 apg in the regular season and led his team to a 41-41 record on way to the playoffs. In the rookies first playoff game he posted 36 points and dropped 11 assists to lead his team to a 105-103 victory over the then defending champions Boston Celtics. But in Game two his 10 points and 7 assists weren't enough and they eventually lost a great playoff series in 7 games.

He shined mostly through the regular season as well as the playoffs but in late game situations he was often taken out for the teams leading scorer Ben Gordan. Now that Gordan has left via free agency to the Detriot Pistions, Rose is front and center in the spotlight. His continued success at the NBA level will ultimately dictate how far the Bulls team will go.

With a healthy Luol Deng and two promising rookies drafted this summer in James Johnson and Taj Gibson (both forwards). As well as 6 year pro Kirk Hinrech's deadly shooting touch, throw in the underated guard John Salmons and athletic freak forward Tyrus Thomas who is still growing in his own right. With a young hard nosed center in Joakim Noah and the veteran toughness of Brad Miller, are the Bulls a dark horse?

This upcoming season the ball is in Rose's hands to forget about his off-season problems and excell to all-star status, put up victories and lead his team as far as his shoulders can take them. So i ask you Derrick Rose and i ask you Bulls fans are the Bulls play-off bound or lottery bound?
</intro>

    <intro>
Michael Jordan might be the best player of all time, but he isn’t the most humblest or nicest player of all time.

Jordan was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame the other day; a great honor deserved by a great player. But unlike C. Vivian Stringer who talked about her family being an influence in her life and how she loved her kids that she coaches and her assistant coaches, Jordan use his time to basically dog out anyone who didn’t believe in him.

Nice huh? Oh I guess it would be too much to ask the greatest basketball player of all time to put away his pettiness to humble himself just this once and thank the people who made him who he is today.

Instead he takes the time to needle former North Carolina coach Dean Smith, pour salt in the wound of his former high school basketball coach who didn’t pick him and the guy he picked over Jordan who Jordan flew up there just so he could say “I told you so.”

But the basketball great wasn’t finished yet. He managed to dog the Chicago Bulls organization by saying yeah you picked me, but I won those games not you guys. Nice real nice MJ. He barely acknowledged Phil Jackson who by the way folks, helped coached him to those NBA titles which eluded him until Jackson got there. I wondered why I didn’t see Phil there, now I understand why.

I’ll give MJ credit, he was polite to Doug Collins and Scottie Pippen and he managed to take a few seconds out of his speech to thank his mom and say love you to his kids, but even then, to his children he managed to get in “I’m glad I’m not you.”

I know there is still a love affair with this man because of his greatness, but his lack of humility is why I never fell in love with MJ. You can be great and have respect for your opponents and the people who helped you get there.

Magic does. Magic Johnson pretty much says all the time that Larry Bird, Charles Barkley and MJ, made him a better player. Larry Bird has said the same thing about Magic and Isiah Thomas. These guys hated each other’s guts on the court, but they respected each other’s greatness without taking away from their own greatness and abilities.

A lesson I guess Michael Jordan has yet to learn.
</intro>

Two beams shoot up from a sad canyon in lower Manhattan, disappearing into the low clouds of a stormy New York night. In the Bronx, No. 2 (Derek Jeter) becomes No. 1 on the hit list.

It is 9/11.

In an odd summer when we lower one legendary MJ into the ground, another MJ is canonized in the basketball Hall of Fame. Reservations for One, please.

Portland took Sam Bowie and Rod Thorn took Michael Jordan and then Chicago owned a sport. New York got Patrick Ewing, a lot of promises, and a haggard legacy of bridesmaids. And there was nothing Jordan loved more than killing the Knicks.

New York, despite the marble of Madison Avenue and the other pockets of odorous wealth, was built on grit, not privilege. What made Jordan so painfully sublime was that he outworked us. It’s John Starks and Charles Oakley pinning Jordan in a corner, then Jordan spinning right, along the baseline, leaving two pros paralyzed before dunking on Ewing.

His gifts were godly, but not unique. He could dunk from the foul line. Julius Erving had already done that. He could score 50 points. Wilt Chamberlain averaged 50 for a season. Everyone in the NBA could score, said Charles Barkley.

Jordan’s singular greatness didn’t arrive on the night he pumped 63 points into the Boston Garden, the double-pump in Cleveland, or the “double nickel” he dropped on my Knicks. It came, in my opinion, on a sleepy morning in Spain. It was 1992.

Chuck Daly, the classy coach of the Detroit Pistons, who died this year, recalled a predawn knock on his door. The groggy leader of the Dream Team creaked open the door to his hotel room, and there stood Jordan on the hallway carpet, his golf bag bulging over his shoulder. Daly beat Jordan in golf the day before, you see, and it was time for payback. This man, on the quick ascent to becoming (as Bob Knight appropriately put) the greatest player in the history of team sports, couldn’t stand losing a game of golf to a geriatric.

He vomited before a game in Utah, getting intravenous fluids at halftime, limping off the court at the buzzer, sick with flu, draped over Scottie Pippen, who carried him to the locker room, 38 points later, in the NBA Finals. Such is the burden of an immortal.

Jordan’s spiritual avatar was that he could not accept defeat, long before “Refuse to Lose” became the byline of losers. He didn’t just need to win; he needed you to die. And he wanted you to know, as the guillotine slid rapidly down, that he was your executioner. (All in a good, sporting metaphorical sense, of course.)

Even his jaunt to Birmingham, where he whiffed at curveballs like a child with a wiffle ball bat, reeked of his need to be challenged. Play cards, play any kind of ball against Jordan and his pride sprouts No. 23. But he returned to his senses and to basketball and the wooden stage he blessed.

In a fascinating interview with Michael Wilbon, Jordan treated his induction with near-contempt, as he loathes to admit that his body won’t follow the orders of his mind. He thinks – and who are we to question? – that he has another run in him.

American sports has a virtual Mount Rushmore, and there are only three entries: Babe Ruth, Muhammad Ali, and Michael Jordan.

    <intro>
From the moment Michael Jordan set foot on a professional basketball court, his talent was clear and you just knew that he was a star in the making. Even on opposing courts, people showed him how much he meant to the game of basketball.

In his first game against the Knicks in Madison Square Garden as a rookie, Jordan received a prolonged standing ovation from the crowd, which is extremely rare for any player on the opposing team, especially in New York. In 1986, after Jordan had scored a playoff record 63 points against the Boston Celtics in 1986, Celtics star Larry Bird said he was "God disguised as Michael Jordan."

Jordan led the NBA in scoring in a NBA record 10 seasons, and he tied Wilt Chamberlain's record of seven consecutive scoring titles. He was also a fixture on the NBA All-Defensive First Team, making the roster nine times, another NBA record. Jordan also holds the top career and playoff scoring averages of 30.1 and 33.4 points per game.

Jordan was well known throughout the NBA as a clutch performer and he proved it game after game. Everyone on the opposing team, every fan watching the game, either in the stands or on TV, knew he was going to get the ball in crunch time and for the majority of the time, he still made the play to win the game.

I still remember a play he made as a rookie. I do not remember what team it was against, but I can still picture it in my mind. Jordan took an inbound pass and drove to the basket and all five players from the other team surrounded him to where you could not even see him anymore. All of a sudden out of the mass of opposing players, the ball shot up and arched right into the basket, nothing but net! I remember raising my arms in amazement and said out loud, “ How does he do that”!

Jordan's total of 5,987 points in the playoffs is the highest in NBA history. He retired with 32,292 points, placing him third on the NBA's all-time scoring list behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone.

Jordan is the most decorated player in NBA history. He has five regular-season MVPs, six Finals MVPs, and three All-Star MVPs. Jordan finished among the top three in regular-season MVP voting a record 10 times, and was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996. He has ten All-NBA First Team designations, nine All-Defensive First Team honors, fourteen NBA All-Star Game appearances, ten scoring titles, three steals titles, and the 1988 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award. He also holds the NBA records for highest career regular-season scoring average with 30.12 points per game, and the highest career playoff scoring average with 33.4 points per game.

Jordan helped lead the Chicago Bulls to six World Championships in eight years and they were divided into “three-peats”. The two years in between the three-peat championships was when Jordan decided to retire and take up baseball for two seasons. Once he figured out that baseball was not his sport, he returned to the Bulls for another three-peat.

In 1999, Jordan was named the greatest North American athlete of the 20th century by ESPN, above icons such as Babe Ruth and Muhammad Ali. Jordan placed second to Babe Ruth in the Associated Press's list of 20th century athletes. In addition, the Associated Press voted him as the best basketball player of the 20th century.

Jordan has also appeared on the front cover of Sports Illustrated a record 49 times. In the September 1996 issue of Sport magazine, which was the 50th anniversary issue, Jordan was named the greatest athlete of the past 50 years.

Jordan's athletic leaping ability, getting him the nicknames “Air Jordan” and “His Airness”, came to life in 1987 and 1988 with his back-to-back slam-dunk contest championships.

Jordan has done much to increase the status of the game of basketball while he was playing. Television ratings increased dramatically for the NBA during his playing career and the ratings substantially lowered each time he left the game.

I can totally relate to this. I was never a huge NBA basketball fan before Michael Jordan entered the league, and once he left, I basically lost interest again. There was never anyone like him before, and there will never be anyone like him again. Close maybe, but no cigar!

In August 2009, the Basketball Hall of Fame opened a Michael Jordan exhibit containing items from his college and NBA careers, as well as from the 1992 Olympic gold medal "Dream Team".

Jordan was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame on April 6, 2009 and will be inducted this Friday September 11, 2009. It is a fitting ending for a one in a lifetime player.

He was the best there ever was on a basketball court and will probably be the best there ever is as well.

Here’s to you Mikey!
</intro>

    <intro>
It's impossible to count on both hands or feet how many Hall of Famers are in the HOF or will be from the so called "Jordan Era."

The Bulls began their great dynasty by defeating the best team in basketball. The Los Angeles Lakers, which had Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabar and James Worthy in 1991.

In subsequent years every team the Bulls faced in the NBA Finals had one or more future Hall of Famers on the team. Clyde Drexler of the Blazers. Gary Payton of the Seattle Supersonics. Charles Barkley and "Thunder" Dan Majerle of the Phoenix Suns. Karl Malone and John Stockton of the Utah Jazz.

I cannot forget the stars they faced along the way to get to the FInals. Reggie Miller of the Pacers. Alonzo Mourning of the Charlotte Hornets and Patrick Ewing of the New York Knicks. Not to mention how many of those players never won championships because of the Jordan led Bulls.

Those were days when if your team had been eliminated you would still watch the rest of the playoffs. The level of excitement never waned. Now when the Bulls are eliminated once again early in the playoffs I stop watching.

That's when baseball season begins for me. I could care less that the Kobe Bryant is on the verge of winning a championship for the first time without Shaq something. Neither Michael Jordan nor Scottie Pippen could do without one another.

How many players from this current era will become Hall of Famers? In an era when there are singular dominant players on teams while the teams in Jordans era had multiple stars on their teams. An era which produced the best team in NBA history.

This era will be remembered more for selfish players than for who were the champions. Phil Jackson will be remembered as possibly the best coach in NBA history but more coaches will be remembered for being fired because the management took the side of their overpaid players.

    <intro>
Point Guard Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls was announced as the NBA’s Rookie of the Year Award on Wednesday. He led his hometown Bulls to the playoffs and brought back some positive vibes to a team in total disorder.

Rose is the third Bulls player to win the award. He joins Michael Jordan and Elton Brand as the only Chicago Bulls to win the award. After leading all NBA rookies with 6.3 assists per game and ranking second in scoring with a 16.8 average, it was no surprise to anyone that Rose handily won the award. Rose is the first legitimate foundation player for the Bulls since Michael Jordon.

Rose grew up on Chicago’s southside and he helped turn around a team in disarray that went 33-49 last season. Rose used his strength, quickness and before his time maturity to help turn the Bulls into a legitimate playoff contender.

His teammates recognized his talent and leadership values from the get go.

“I think there are very few people in the NBA who could do what he did this year,” teammate Joakim Noah said. “You tell me another No. 1 pick that got to the playoffs in their hometown, especially in a big city with so many distractions and so many things going on. I mean, he’s all about one thing and that’s winning basketball games, and that’s what I respect about him.”

The way Rose approached the game, as well as his talent, impressed Bulls veteran guard Lindsey Hunter too.

“Not many guys can transfer it from here to there that fast,” Hunter said, pointing from his head to the court. “But he’s able to do that. I think that’s what’s so unique about him. I’ve got a lot of friends who are coaches. I’m like, ‘Man, you guys don’t know how good he is. He doesn’t even understand what he is yet.’ I see him being that point guard that is going to push Deron Williams and Chris Paul to the limit.”

This season, Rose won the Eastern Conference rookie of the month three times during the season, in November, December and then once more in March. He helped the Bulls play .500 ball and reach the playoffs this season. In last Saturday’s playoff opener against the Celtics in Boston, Rose tied Lew Alcindor’s (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) scoring record for a rookie’s first playoff appearance with 36 points and 11 assists in a 105-103 Bulls overtime victory.

In game two of the series, a Bulls loss by a last second 3-point shot by the Celtics, Rose had 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

Former Bulls and current Lakers coach Phil Jackson has been impressed with Rose this season.

“He can finish around the basket, and that’s not easy for—he’s not small, but he’s not a big guard, he’s good at that, and that’s impressive for a guy that size. His quickness to the basket is impressive,” Jackson said.

Rose excelled from day one and never really slowed down, even though he was benched late in games earlier in the season. That practice stopped once general manager John Paxson had a talk with Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro. Nevertheless, whether he was on the bench or playing in the closing moments, Rose never complained to his teammates or to the media.

Lakers star Kobe Bryant took notice on Rose’s ability as well. “He plays both ends of the court, which is refreshing to see, a lot of young players don’t play both ends. He works hard at it, defense as well.”

Pacers coach Jim O’Brien went as far as to compare Rose to Cavaliers star LeBron James.

“They’re different positions, but LeBron James has the same thing, it’s hard to knock him off his driving lane,” O’Brien said. “And I think he’s improved his outside shot. And I think he knows the game.”

From the first time he came home to the Bulls, Rose has fit in with Chicago. The Bulls won the draft lottery despite the 1.7 percent odds of them getting the #1 pick. IT was without a doubt their biggest victory in years. The Bulls had a big decision to make between Rose and Kansas State forward Michael Beasley. In the end, they decided to go with Rose, the guard who grew up in Englewood, which is a hop, skip, and a jump from the United Center in Chicago.

The Bulls saw an energizing floor leader, a team player, and most importantly, a winner.

In high school, Rose led Simeon Career Academy to the state championship and in college; he led Memphis to 38 wins and the NCAA championship game. Now, he is helping the Bulls turn things around in Chicago.

With Derrick Rose running the show, the Bulls think that they have their foundation player for the next 10 years.

Derrick Rose does not realize how good he is or how good he can become. And that is the way it should be.

</intro>

    <intro>
Bulls officially clinch playoff berth and currently sit in the 7th spot in the East playoff race.

On Thursday the Bulls won their 7th straight game at the united center 113-99 against the Sixers who currently hold the sixth spot in the eastern conference playoff race. The Bulls now have locked up a playoff birth with a late season spark that may have come from the Brad Miller and John Salmons trade. With those two players brought a seasoned 10 year veteran in Brad Miller and another offensive scoring option in John Salmons who averaged 18 points a game in Sacramento. Chicago is now holding the 7th spot above Detroit who is tied with Chicago but the Bulls hold the advantage in the tie breaker. The last three games Chicago plays will determine if they can still move up and not drop to the 8th and last spot where they would have to play King James and his Cavilers. Saturday’s game will be in Chicago against the Bobcats in what was being looked at as a huge game for both teams. But with the Bobcats all but mathematically eliminated from the playoffs proves huge only for one team and that’s the Bulls. Chicago has a chance to potentially reach even the sixth seed which as of today’s playoff picture they would play the Magic. Luol Deng now out for the season with a tibia stress fracture could mean trouble for the Bulls come playoffs. With the late season surge Vinny Del Negro has been playing a 7 man rotation and players are getting more minuets and seem to be alot happier than earlier in the season. At the start of this season and towards the all-star break Del Negro was trying to get a feel for his team and tried out many different on floor combinations. Players seemed to be unhappy with who was on the floor and when. Now that player roles are more apparent as in Tyrus
Thomas and Joakim Noah they have played extremely well and are learning how to play as a team and not individually. But with Derrick Rose leading all rookies in minutes played and the new 7 man rotation in place we have to see if this young Bulls team has enough energy left to make noise in the playoffs. Having a young team is definitely a positive and negative when it comes to playoffs. With being young the energy to get through the playoffs should be there but experience is minimal. Sure Derrick Rose was in the NCAA championship just a year ago and knows the pressures of post season but NBA post season is going to have more talent in players and coaching. Vinny Del Negro may be a rookie coach but is no stranger to the NBA as he played 13 seasons with 4 different teams and played in 54 playoff games. That with new addition veteran Brad Miller will bring some much needed experience for Chicago. This post season will could be redemption for the Chicago Bulls to from last year missing the playoffs and the year before sweeping the Heat only to get knocked out by Detroit in the next round. Let’s wait and see if this Chicago Bulls team can finally bring excitement back to Chicago with the lingering NBA championship drought since Jordan and the unbeatabulls.

    <intro>
Can the Chicago Bulls keep the 7th spot in the Eastern confrence playoff picture?

As of wednesday the Chicago Bulls hold the 7th spot in the eastern conference playoff race and as of now would be playing Boston in the first round. The Pistons are barely keeping playoff hopes alive in Detroit with the 8th and final spot trailing Chicago by a half game. In striking distance still are the Bobcats trailing Detroit for that last spot by 2.5 games. With 4 games left Chicago will only play one of those on the road while Detroit has 5 games left with 3 on the road. Advantage goes to Chicago as they play much better at home with a record of 26-12 and on the road 12-28. Chicago seems to be running away with that 7th spot with a win against New York last night at home to make it a 5 game home winning streak. The united center will bring in Philadelphia 76ers , charlotte Bobcats, and the Toronto Raptors for the reaming home games. Also not to mention the only road game is against the Pistons. Can Derrick Rose candidate for rookie of the year and rookie coach Vinny Del Negro take this team into the playoffs and be successful? If the Bulls hold a spot in the playoffs Rose should be a lock if he already isn't for the rookie of the year honors. Chicago did not get into a groove until after the all-star break and playoffs still looked like a far fetched idea. Even the Bulls faithful had thoughts of no playoffs but with Derrick's unselfish and spectacular play Chicago started making some noise. If you think that last years loss in the college championship had lingering affects on Derrick Rose and his hunger to win then your wrong. This young player is showing off his mature mentality and leadership quality’s leading this up and coming Chicago team. Now the Celtics could be tough completion in the first round but the Bulls have played them well winning 3 out of 4 meetings this year. Most recently the St. Patrick's day game where the Bulls won 127-121 with Chicago in the green uniforms. Everyone knows that the playoffs are a totally different game so we will have to wait and see if this young Chicago team can be successful.

    <intro>
We all knew it was inevitable. No one ever questioned it. It was nothing but net, a slam-dunk. His Airness, Michael Jordan, the greatest basketball player to ever play the game will now officially be where he belongs, in the pro basketball Hall of Fame.

Jordan was elected to Halls class of 2009 Monday along with David Robinson, John Stockton, coach Jerry Sloan and Rutgers women’s coach C. Vivian Stringer.

From the site of this years men’s Final Four this year in Detroit, Jordan, in his first year of eligibility, it was announced he had made it in. This should not have come as a surprise to anyone. Jordan’s induction will be from Sept. 10-12 in Springfield, Mass., home of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

In talking about his induction, Jordan gave much of the credit on Monday to his college coach at North Carolina, Dean Smith.

“There’s no way you guys would have got a chance to see Michael Jordan play without Dean Smith,” he said.

Because of his athleticism, his game changing moves, towering dunks, Nike commercials and “Air Jordan” nickname, Jordan was a household name throughout the sports world. He was the best, and it will be a long time, if ever, that another player ever plays the game with the intensity and talent of Michael Jordan.

He playe for 15 years in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards and ended his career with 32,292 points. That is the third-highest point total in NBA history, trailing only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone. His career point average of 30.12 per game is the best in NBA history, trailed only by Wilt Chamberlain’s points per game average of 30.07.

Jordan was a five-time NBA MVP and won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls. He also won a National Championship in college with the North Carolina Tar Heels. Ironically, North Carolina will be playing Michigan State in the national championship game tonight.

Current North Carolina coach Roy Williams was also with Jordan on that 1982 national championship team as an assistant coach and was on hand Monday for the induction announcement.

Jordan retired three times from the NBA during his career. He first retirement from basketball was from the Chicago Bulls in 1994 after they won their third straight championship. He then decided to play professional baseball for a year and a half before returning to the Bulls to win three more NBA championships in a row. Both championship stints became known as three-peats. After the second three-peat in 1998, he retired for the second time from the Chicago Bulls, most people thinking his great career was over. But it wasn’t, in 2001, he came out of retirement and had a forgettable and very un-Jordanesque two-year fiasco with the Washington Wizards before finally retiring for good in 2003. Jordan will always be a Chicago Bull though. As time goes on, his time with the Wizards will long forgotten.

Irony number two for the day, two of Jordan’s NBA Championships came against two of his fellow Hall of Fame inductees. They were against Sloan and Stockton, who were with the Utah Jazz. The Bulls Final championship, which was against the Jazz, being won on a classic Jordan juke and jump shot with less then 15 seconds left on the game clock. If not for his stint with the Wizards, this would have been a classic last shot in the NBA.

On Monday, when he saw Stockton, he joked that he was ready to put his shorts on again.

“Growing up I never thought about the Hall of Fame,” he said. “All I wanted was a chance to go to college.”

Michael Jordan was and always will an icon in the game of basketball. He played the game like no other, was a team leader, and a winner, both on and off the basketball court.

</intro>

    <intro>
John Paxson to Resign

Sources from the New York Times and the Chicago Sun Times have confirmed that John Paxson will step down as General Manager of the Chicago Bulls soon after the trade deadline on Feb. 19th. The Chicago Bulls are 23-30 and as of late are starting to resemble a team that may be on the rise. That is why I don’t understand why John Paxson is doing this now? There has to be more to this story. Right? Well at least that is what I think is the case. This started as far back as the Mike D”Antoni signing. That is the coach that John Paxson truly wanted and he wanted him bad. The problem with that was that Jerry Reinsdorf wouldn’t buck up. It would have only been about 5 million more over the span of 5 years but Jerry wouldn’t do it. Even if the Bulls had a chance to match the offer from the Knicks Reinsdorf wouldn’t have done it. He still owed Scott Skiles money from his contract and Reinsdorf doesn’t care enough about his basketball operations and probably even who his coach is.

This is where the problem lies. Reinsdorf doesn’t care at all and Paxson cares too much. No matter what product the bulls put out on the floor they will always be in the top 5 in attendance and that ultimately is what Reinsdorf cares about. Now, although I don’t believe Pax has done a good job I do believe the players are improving. Tyrus Thomas is really coming on as of late it and Joakim Noah is looking more like the Joakim Noah that won two national championships with Florida. The Bulls ceiling appears to be getting higher especially now that they have Derrick Rose. So why would Paxson step down? It even seems as if he has good trading chips now. He may be able to acquire a big time player such as Amare Stoudemire. He finally has a chance to right the ship. But once again that could be where the problem lies. He may not really know if trading for Amare Stoudemire would be the right move. That would be your biggest move because you would have to sign him to a max deal. The thing is if Paxson doesn’t make that trade he will be crucified by the Chicago media and fans. He just can’t handle it anymore. He cares so much about this team and his boss couldn’t care less. He wanted a different coach and he got stuck with a rookie coach probably because he was cheap. The bottom line is John Paxson tried. He never had a chance to get Kobe because he was never going to get traded I don’t care what anyone says. Kevin Garnett maybe could have gone to the bulls but was traded between friends Kevin Mchale and Danny Ainge, so once again not likely. Pau Gasol was probably the one he could have had but if that was the case the Bulls would have been an improved team and not ended up with number 1 pick Derrick Rose. The Bulls appear to be playing better and have a future superstar in Derrick Rose so why leave now Pax? I think Jerry probably knows.
</intro>
